Here we have a set of matching vintage hardcovers The Iliad and The Odyssey, by Homer. There were published by Walter J. Black as part of the Classics Club Library, in 1942 (The Iliad) and 1944 (The Odyssey). They are bound in beige binder's cloth over hardcover boards, with red, black and gold accents and decorations, and feature dyed top edges on the text blocks. Both are translated into English by Samuel Butler, and edited by Louise Ropes Loomis.

Both books are in excellent condition. There is minimal shelf wear, and some light soiling on the edges of the text blocks. The Iliad has one page which was trimmed incorrectly at one corner, due to it being folded before the trim occurred. As a result the corner sticks out past the edge of the text block unless it is folded in, and it has been creased and has a closed tear. Please see photos. A previous owner's mark is stamped on the first free end paper of both books.

Uncle Remus: His Songs and Sayings (Heritage Press Collector’s Edition)

Here we have an attractive paperback of the classic legend Beowulf, translated to modern English by Seamus Heaney. It was printed in 2000 by Faber & Faber Limited, in the UK. It features gatefold covers on the front and back.

The book is in excellent condition. The corners are slightly bumped, and several of the pages have been previously dog-eared, and have corner creases as a result.

Composed towards the end of the first millennium, the Anglo-Saxon poem Beowulf is one of the great Northern epics and a classic of European literature. In his new translation, Seamus Heaney has produced a work which is both true, line by line, to the original poem, and an expression, in its language and music, of something fundamental to his own creative gift. The poem is about encountering the monstrous, defeating it, and then having to live on, physically and psychically exposed, in that exhausted aftermath. It is not hard to draw parallels between this story and the history of the twentieth century, nor can Heaney's Beowulf fail to be read partly in the light of his Northern Irish upbringing. But it also transcends such considerations, telling us psychological and spiritual truths that are permanent and liberating.

Here we have the complete Tripods Trilogy, by John Christopher, in paperbacks published by Collier Books in 1988. This was released as a boxed set, but the box is gone. All three volumes feature cover art by Tim Hildebrandt. It appears they were formerly part of a school library.

Here we have a first edition hardcover copy of Debt of Bones, by Terry Goodkind. It is published by Gollancz in Great Britain, in 2001, and features the original dust jacket with artwork by Keith Parkinson.

The book and dust jacket are in excellent condition. The book is nearly like new, with a tight binding, and no noticeable wear on the edges or corners. There are no rips, creases, or markings inside or out. The dust jacket has some wrinkling, but no major creasing and no tears.

Here we have a small hardcover edition of The Fifth Elephant by Terry Pratchett. It is the 24th book in his Discworld series. I think this is a book club edition, because it doesn't include a print number line, and is physically smaller than the ordinary hardcover. 

The book is in excellent condition. There is a bit of light soiling on the front endpapers, but otherwise the book is free of rips, creases, or markings, inside and out. The dust jacket has some creases and wrinkles.

Everyone knows that the world is flat, and supported on the backs of four elephants. But weren't there supposed to be five? Indeed there were, and what happened to the fifth elephant is only one of the many perplexing mysteries solved in this new novel by today's most celebrated fantasy humorist.

Terry Pratchett's profoundly irreverent Discworld novels have been number one bestsellers in England for more than a decade, securing him a position in the pantheon of satire and parody alongside Kurt Vonnegut, Douglas Adams, and Carl Hiaasen. Pratchett's fame, like his imagination, is now going global--if such a term can be used in connection with an author whose creation is so uncompromisingly (though no longer quite so unfashionably) flat.

Which brings us back to the missing mythical pachyderm. The Fifth Elephant begins, like so many of Pratchett's satirical inventions, with an invitation. Vimes's "elephant" adventure is as profound as it is hilarious, sending up every aspect of modern life from royalty (a British specialty) to bureaucrats (inescapable anywhere), from cops (especially those unusually dressed) to criminals (who, like fools, have their own guild), from fantasy literature to satire itself.

The binding is tight, and there are no marks, rips, or creases in the text block. There is some edge wear at the head and foot of the spine. There is also some light discoloration or soiling on the the edges of text block, as well as on the covers, where it looks like some metallic paint or leaf has rubbed off onto the book in a few places.

Here we have a hardcover copy of Towers of Midnight, book thirteen of The Wheel of Time, by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson. It is from the second printing of the first edition, and features color maps on the endpapers, Robert Jordan's auto-pen signature on the title page, and beautiful cover art by Darrell K. Sweet.

There is some slight discoloration on the bottom edge of the text block, and several pages have small nicks in the top edge. Other than these minor imperfections, the condition is better than most new books I have received from Amazon.
