Tarrasch lost a world championship match with Lasker in 1908. It is Part of the "Black" series of Outstanding Players of the World, so-called because of the Black DJs. Royal octavo (9 3/4" x 6 3/4") bound in original publisher's pectoral boards. First edition.Donner Memorial (Date: 1996) was eleven rounds in 13 days, starting on Saturday 17 August (45 games). Rest days 21 & 26 August. Elo average: 2629 (Category XVI). Granda Zuniga and Ivanchuk shared 1st place with 7/11.The organization was in the hands of the Foundation for the Promotion of Chess Sports in the Netherlands . The costs were paid by a private financier, who had guaranteed the tournament for three years. After the third edition, the private financier withdrew, and there were no commercial parties willing to take on the sponsorship. The tournament disappeared from the chess calendar again after three editions. The book also contains games from the subsidiary tournaments. This is the classic book about Capablanca by the American Master Fred Reinfeld. It contains 113 deeply annotated games in English descriptive notation with copious diagrams, a biography, and an introduction by the American Grandmaster, Robert Byrne. It is a sturdy trade paperback. The previous owner’s name is neatly penciled on the front free endpaper. There are 2 almost invisible clear tape reinforcements to the covers. The covers to show signs of wear, but no tears. On page 57 I have attached a sticky note correction to the identity of the player of the black pieces, not marking the text. This could be removed without damage to the book. The original price of the book was $4.95.

The immortal games of Capablanca

This 48 page monograph covers the 1969 world chess championship between Tigran Petrosian and Boris Spassky. Spassky won, avenging his loss in 1966 through the same opponent. It is printed on good quality glossy paper. The former owner signature is on the inside front cover. There is a faint brown stain to the spine as shown in the photos, else I would consider this in like new condition. There are good quality notes, diagrams, and caricatures. It is in English descriptive notation. As of early March 2025 the lowest price on the book search engine addall .com is $12.12. By my copy and save! My original cost was three dollars, over 50 years ago!

This book is a games collection of the late Midwestern chess master Hugh Myers, who I think once beat Bobby Fischer in a blitz game. The emphasis is on unusual openings as shown in the photograph of the index. The book is in English descriptive notation with many diagrams and detailed notes. Among his opponents were grandmasters Robert Byrne, Gligoric, Lombardy and Suttles. This book is quite rare and the lowest price on the Book search engine addall .com is $69. Exploring the chess openings

This book was published in 1995, but remains an excellent introduction to the variation. Its’ pawn structures and themes. The only copy I see for sale on Amazon as of early March 2025 is listed at $9.98. Buy my copy and save!

This book covers the strong post war chess tournament in Zaanstreek Holland. The annotations are by the Czech grandmaster Kottnauer. There are caricuratures, diagrams, cogent notes, and round summaries. There are also games from the subsidiary tournaments. The pages are beginning to slightly tan with age. There is where to the boards in the upper corner as shown in the photos on the front free endpaper a previous owner has written “from chess review April 1947” as shown in the photos. The biting is sound and the pageslie flat. This is a handsome volume of an extremely important post war chess tournament. I paid $36 for this book, many years ago. I was only able to find one copy from a United States seller at a Book search engine for $50 from another seller. Buy my copy and save!

A tournament to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Chess Club Zaandam was planned for September 1944, but due to circumstances had to be postponed to June 1946. Travelling in Europe was difficult at the time, and three of the foreign masters were absent when the first round started on June 3. Szabo arrived later that day, and played his first round game on June 9, the only rest day. Kottnauer and Opocensky were replaced by Kramer and Soultanbeieff, who were scheduled to play in one of the reserve sections. Most games were played in Zaandam, only rounds 4 and 5 in a location in the neighbouring city of Wormerveer. Kottnauer, who arrived on the third day, analysed the games for the tournament book and also played in an extra 6-player event in Zaandam, immediately following the big tournament, with Szabo, Stoltz and three Dutch players. First place was capture by Max Euwe (+9 -1 =1). Second through third were Laszlo Szabo and Nils Johan Folke Ekstrom (+7 -1 =3). Fourth was Gosta Stoltz (+7 -2 =2).

This book covers the games of the Hastings international chess tournament held in December 1973 and January 1974. It is in figurine algebraic notation. The notes are informant style. Please refer to the photographs. Many games are annotated. There is a three page summary of the tournament. The annotators include Tal, Timman, Basman, Miles, Keene, Adorjan, Szabo et al. There are many diagrams, English language books with notes by Tal are few in number. List price was $2.10.

This pamphlet contains all of the games of the strong 1971 Venice tournament, as well as selected games from the other tournaments as shown in the photos. It is in figurine algebraic notation. Just look at the list of the commentators! Hort, Portisch, Kavalek,Browne,Uhlmann,Ljubjevic, Velimorovic, Ulf Andersson et al! it also contains photographs, cross tables, and a few selected tactical exercise exercises. It would be considered in like new condition except that the staples are beginning to rust.

These two pamphlets contain all the games of the chess tournaments listed in the titles. Both pamphlets have openings Surveys and crosstables. Many strong players participated, including Benko, Matulovic, Ivkov,Geller, Bronstein, Vastukov and Shamkovich. The Kizlovodosk pamphlet is in overall good condition but has some soiling to the covers and penciled checkmarks and corrections to the notation in pencil as shown in the photos. The Vrsac pamphlet is in like new condition. My acquisition cost was $2.70.

This book by international Master Al Horowitz, gives the games of the 1934 world chess championship match. It has diagrams, good annotations, and it printed on glossy paper. It has stiff cardboard covers, and the spine has been reinforced neatly with clear tape and the binding is intact. It has 35 pages.

These 2 Chess Player monographs cover the strong tournaments in Mar del Plata 1971 and Pärnu 1971. The former had Browne, Najdorf, Mecking, Savon and Polugayevesky et al, and the latter, Tal, Keres, Leonid Stein, and Bronstein et al. My acquisition costs were $4.95 and $4.75 respectively. The former had a detailed opening survey the latter just the game scores. The former is in English descriptive notation, the latter in algebraic notation. The latter is in small format as shown in the photographs.

This is the Spanish language tournament book of the famous 1960 Buenos Aires event. It was won by Viktor Korchnoi and Samuel Reshevsky in front of Laszlo Szabo and Larry Evans.See the photographs for further placings. Bobby Fischer played in possibly his worst tournament, tying for 13th place. It has been said that this was due to Fischer’s involvement with a professional woman during the event. The book is printed on good quality paper and is in Spanish descriptive notation. There is a slight bend of the upper 1 inch part of the spine, and a faint price in pencil on the lower right back cover. Otherwise, the book is an excellent condition with a sound binding. It has many photographs, good annotations, diagrams, an openings review, profiles of players, a summary of the tournament, and an article about the personalities of the players. The book is quite rare, and I could only find one copy for sale on several search engines. That copy would cost $48 plus $22 shipping to deliver to the United States from Argentina.

This chess biography with 90 deeply annotated games covers the career of the straw Hungarian Grandmaster through 1979. It has his tournament and match record, and numerous diagrams. The book itself is in excellent condition with the former owner’s signature on the front free endpaper. The dust jacket is missing.

Lajos Portisch (born 4 April 1937) is a Hungarian chess Grandmaster, whose positional style earned him the nickname, the "Hungarian Botvinnik". One of the strongest non-Soviet players from the early 1960s into the late 1980s, he participated in twelve consecutive Interzonals from 1962 through 1993, qualifying for the World Chess Championship Candidates Cycle a total of eight times (1965, 1968, 1974, 1977, 1980, 1983, 1985, and 1988). Portisch set several all-time records in Chess Olympiads. In Hungarian Chess Championships, he either shared the title or won it outright a total of eight times (1958, 1959, 1961, 1964, 1965, 1971, 1975, and 1981). He won many strong international tournaments during his career. He won matches against Reshevsky, Korchnoi and Larsen.

In 280 pages Doctor Fiala covers the chess career of Capablanca in 1910. The book has photographs, extensive use of color, contemporary annotations, and figurine algebraic notation. It also includes Capablanca’s notes to some of the world championship match games  between Lasker and Schlechter.

This book is in very good condition, close to excellent, but I have listed it as good to be conservative. It was published for sale at $4.95, the equivalent of $32.87 today. It contains all the available games from the former world champion’s early career, mostly annotated. It has photographs, cross tables, and a 20+ page biography, it has a brief forward by Karpov himself, with a facsimile autograph. The book is signed by the former owner on the front  free endpaper. The notation is English descriptive as shown in the photographs. Unlike most of the. RHM paperback books of the 1970s, the binding is sewn and fully intact. It has 303 pages. The lowest price I could find as of mid January 2025 on eBay and search engines was $12. Buy my copy and save a little!

The covers are sun faded, and former owners signature is on the front free endpaper, but the book is in overall excellent condition with sewn signatures. It has 75 deeply annotated games in English descriptive notation, with many diagrams and 164 pages. Grandmaster Fine was in the top eight players in the world in the late 1930s. The lowest price on eBay as of mid January 2025 is $8.99, buy my copy and save.

There is sunning of the spine as shown in the photos, and the former owner’s signature on the front inside cover.

This extremely rare Russian language book covers the famous tournament in Holland in 1938, won by Keres and Fine ahead of Euwe, Capablanca, Alekhine, Reshevsky, Botvinnik and Flohr. It was one of the strongest tournaments ever played. The book has deluxe leather like covers, detailed notes to all the games by Soviet Masters, a preface by Botvinnik, and numerous diagrams. The Russian text is easy to follow using the Google Translate app. there is a small indentation in the top of the front cover as shown in the photos.

The ninth and 10th volumes of chess informant have been professionally bound into a single volume. It covers the entirety of chess in 1970. Most people do not know that Bobby Fischer contributed annotations to some volumes of the chess informant. This book contains three games annotated by him, his two victories over Petrosian in the famous USSR versus the world match, and his long draw with Walter Browne, where Bobby played an Alekhine defense. Look at the list of commentators! The book contains the usual combinations and endings.Karpov annotated one ending, one of his earliest contributions to chess literature. The separate soft covers of these two volumes costs almost $33 on Amazon.

Chess Informant 9 & 10

This book by the international master McCambridge covers the early career of the American grandmaster Yasser Seirawan. 29 mostly heavily annotated games with numerous diagrams are given after a nine page biography. This book is hard to find. The former owner’s signature is present on the inside front cover. Unlike most books published by players press, the binding is sound although it is cracked between pages 50 and 51. The book is in figurine algebraic notation. It contains 145 pages.

The Games of Yasser Seirawan

This book is in Swedish language by the late Swedish Grandmaster, Gideon Stahlberg. An excellent chess biography of him has recently been published. The Swedish text is easy to follow using the Google Translate app. The tournament was won by David Bronstein, in front of Laszlo Szabo, Isaac Boleslavsky et al. See the photograph of the tournament cross table. This book has a solid binding, but the covers are chipped, and the front hinge is tender. There is a small piece of tape securing a divot in the front cover, as shown in the photographs. The book itself internally is quite nice, having good quality, glossy paper, photographs, a cross table and good annotations. It has 359 pages. A copy currently listed on eBay as of New Year’s Day 2025 is listed for over $210 including shipping from the UK. I could not find any other copies available from a North American seller currently. I paid $44 for this over 20 years ago from the late chess book dealer Dale Brandreth.
