Un auténtico héroe popular en América Latina y el artista más importante de México, junto a su esposa, la pintora Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera (1886-1957) tuvo una vida apasionada dedicada al arte y el comunismo. Tras pasar unos años (en la década de 1910) en Europa, donde se rodeó de otros creadores y abrazó el movimiento Cubista, regresó a México y comenzó a pintar los murales a gran escala que le hicieron famoso. En ellos abordó temas sociales y políticos relacionados con la clase trabajadora, ganándose un estatus profético entre los campesinos de su país. Fue invitado a crear piezas en el extranjero, especialmente en Estados Unidos, donde provocó controversia al retratar a Lenin en un mural para el Rockefeller Center de Nueva York (que fue destruido antes de que se terminara). La obra más notable de Rivera es su Detroit Industry (Industria de Detroit) de 1932, un grupo de 27 frescos en el Detroit Institute of Art en Michigan. Este volumen presenta numerosos detalles a gran escala de los murales, permitiendo que sus diversos componentes y sutilezas sean examinados de cerca. Además de los estos, se incluye una gran selección de pinturas, fotografías de época, documentos y dibujos de colecciones públicas y privadas de todo el mundo, muchos de los cuales eran hasta ahora desconocidos para los estudiosos y cuya inclusión ha sido posible gracias a la más intensa investigación realizada sobre el trabajo de Rivera desde su muerte.
