Seller Description
In Steppenwolf (1927), Hermann Hesse tells of a man at war with himself. Harry Haller, known as the “lone wolf of the steppes,” finds no joy in the civilized world of the bourgeoisie, to which he harbors a secret attraction; nor does he feel at ease in the unrestrained world of the senses, for which he shows contempt. A learned man, Haller devotes most of his time to poetry, music, and philosophy. Yet, despite his education and his morbid self-awareness, Haller is unable to resolve the conflict within himself. When he happens upon a club called The Magic Theater and meets a woman who initiates him in the art of pleasure, his dilemma deepens. The theater conjures up images of Haller’s divided personality in a fantastical show, taking him on a surreal journey. In the end, Haller begins to understand that peace lies not in reconciling the civilized and savage sides of himself, but in accepting the fragmented nature of his psyche. NOTE: Contains adult and mature themes.
