Seller Description
Condition: withdrawn library book with common library stickers and marks, cover a bit curled, some light edge wear - This book is a partial inventory of vital record manuscripts (church records, minister records, town vital records, tax lists, employment records, petitions, subscriptions, passenger lists, etc.) for all time periods. I examined all of the online and paper manuscript finding aids at the six state historical societies in New England, and made a list of all the records that will help to locate your person of interest. Each record in the book includes the call number, manuscript collection name, box number, and (usually) the folder number (everything required to locate the record). Items from card catalogs and online catalogs are not included in the book. Each of the six historical societies contains items for the other New England states. For example, the Maine Historical Society has manuscript items for states other than Maine. Some Maine items probably reside in historical societies outside of New England. The manuscript collections of the six historical societies include items from locales outside New England, such as: 1803–1805 Wilmington, Delaware, subscriptions 1847–1848 East Du Page, Illinois, school attendance records 1834–1836 Louisville, Kentucky, Sunday School students 1754 Little Molly passenger list from Newfoundland 1802 Jamaica estate slave lists 1839 Cuba slave lists. Roughly 45 percent of the items in the book do not appear in any of the societies’ catalogs; they are present in the manuscript finding aids only. Therefore, these items are “hidden.” In order to locate those hidden items you would have to read through all of the manuscript finding aids (online and paper) for all six states. That was the purpose of this project: to locate those hidden items that are useful in historical and genealogical research. Hopefully, this book will be beneficial to a wide range of researchers.
