In New York Times bestselling author Stephanie Garber’s Once Upon a Broken Heart series, fractured fairy tales meet modern romance. This romantasy series is a trilogy made up of three books: Once Upon a Broken Heart (2021), The Ballad of Never After (2022), and A Curse for True Love (2023), each replete with thrilling adventures and romantic storylines that will captivate you from start to finish. And if the spellbinding narrative isn’t enough, the special editions of this series take the reader's experience to a whole new level. If you’re looking to purchase Once Upon a Broken Heart, take a look at some of your options below and get ready to fall headfirst into a world where broken hearts find their own kind of magic.

What is the Once Upon a Broken Heart series about?

This series, which takes place in the Caraval universe, centers around Evangeline Fox, also known as Ev. When her heart is shattered in a deal gone awry, she embarks on a perilous quest to mend the pieces and reclaim her lost love. As she navigates a realm of dark secrets, dangerous bargains, and unexpected alliances, Ev must unravel the mysteries of her own heart and confront the consequences of playing a game where the stakes are higher than ever. Fans of fairy tale retellings will love this new approach to familiar elements, and fantasy and romance readers won’t be able to get enough of Ev’s story.

Once Upon a Broken Heart Special Editions

Available in both hardcover and paperback, the original cover of Once Upon a Broken Heart features a black background and salmon-pink embellishments that form a cracked heart. Glitter adorns the heart, and both the title and author’s name are printed in white. If you take off the dust cover of a hardcover copy, you’ll see a black book with a gold foil apple in the bottom right corner.

For those interested in this version of Once Upon a Broken Heart, you can currently get your very own copy on PangoBooks.

The Barnes and Noble Exclusive Edition

The Barnes and Noble Exclusive Edition of Once Upon a Broken Heart is very similar to the original cover design, except it features a pink background instead of black. The cracked heart is still in the same salmon-pink, but the title and author’s name are now printed in black. Dark purple smoke emanates from the bottom of the heart, hinting that not all is well in this pink fairytale world you’re about to enter. The spine is silver, and the physical book underneath the dust jacket is pink as well.

This exclusive edition of Once Upon a Broken Heart is out of stock at Barnes and Noble. However, luckily for you, it is still available on PangoBooks. You can also purchase the Barnes and Noble Exclusive Editions of all three books in the trilogy (Once Upon a Broken Heart, The Ballad of Never After, and A Curse for True Love) as a bundle here

The UK Limited Edition

When Once Upon a Broken Heart was first published in September 2021, it had a UK edition that was very different from the original US cover design. These copies’ covers depict a doorway in a blue wall. An armored knight stands on each side of the doorway, but the knight on the right is missing their head. Foxes, stars, and flowers adorn this more complex cover, and the title and author’s name is printed in gold. When you take off the dust jacket, you’ll see a beautiful gold foil pattern printed on the cover of the book itself.

Needless to say, this edition sold out very quickly. In the summer of 2023, Garber announced that there would be a second – and final – limited run of this edition, which flew off the shelves. If you did not manage to snag this copy during one of those two times, don’t worry. We have multiple copies still for sale on PangoBooks.

The UK Paperback Edition

If you're looking for a paperback copy of this trilogy, check out these festive UK editions! For Once Upon a Broken Heart, the cover is similar to the UK limited edition, except it features a red background. The wall is a creamy white instead of blue, and the title and author's name are printed in white. In addition, this design swaps out red flowers for yellow and orange foxes for red. Curved at the top of the cover, printed in gold, is the warning: "Never make a deal with a fate...."

You can snag these festive editions right here on Pango! But hurry to secure your copy before someone else takes it. Once a book is sold, we don't know when another copy will be available.

Currently, Once Upon a Broken Heart enjoys a 4.36 star rating on PangoBooks. The Ballad of Never After has a 4.64 star rating, and A Curse for True Love has a 4.28 star rating. There will not be a fourth book in this series. However, if you want more of Garber's writing, we recommend the Caraval trilogy, which begins with Caraval and is set in the same universe.
