Jake Adelstein

Jake Adelstein is an American journalist and writer who is best known for his work on crime and the yakuza in Japan. Born on May 28, 1969, Adelstein moved to Japan to study at Sophia University. He became the first non-Japanese staff writer for the Japanese newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun, where he worked as a crime reporter. Adelstein gained significant attention for his investigative journalism on the dark underbelly of Japanese society, including the criminal world of the yakuza. His most famous work is the book "Tokyo Vice: An American Reporter on the Police Beat in Japan," published in 2009, which narrates his experiences and challenges while covering the crime beat in Japan. His work often explores themes of corruption, vice, and the complex interplay between the Japanese underworld and official institutions. Adelstein's contributions to the understanding of Japanese society through the lens of crime journalism have earned him recognition and he continues to write and report on these issues.
