Henry Louis Gates Jr. is an American literary critic, scholar, and public intellectual who is the Alphonse Fletcher University Professor and Director of the Hutchins Center for African and African American Research at Harvard University. He is best known for his work on African-American literature, African-American history, and the history of the African diaspora. He is also a frequent contributor to The Root, a website dedicated to African-American culture.
