Charles Simic is an American poet, essayist, and translator. He was born in Yugoslavia in 1938 and immigrated to the United States in 1954. Simic is widely considered one of the major American poets of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, and has won numerous awards, including the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1990.
