Ann J. Lane was an American historian and academic known for her contributions to women's history and feminist studies. Born on December 3, 1931, she received her Ph.D. from Columbia University and went on to teach at a number of institutions, including Colgate University, Brown University, Wesleyan University, and the University of Virginia. Lane's work often centered on the exploration of women's experiences and roles in society. She is well-recognised for her biography of the suffragist and feminists Matilda Joslyn Gage, titled "Matilda Joslyn Gage: She Who Holds the Sky," as well as her edited collection of the works of Charlotte Perkins Gilman, including the foundational feminist text, "The Charlotte Perkins Gilman Reader." Throughout her career, Lane was an advocate for gender equality and sought to shed light on the often-overlooked contributions of women in history. She passed away on May 27, 2013, leaving behind a legacy of scholarship that continues to inform and influence the fields of women's history and feminist theory.
